Family members at different ages are increasingly embedded in and connected to each other via mobile media and communication technologies. This lecture begins by introducing the concept of digital family that was originally presented in my book Intergenerational Connections in Digital Families (Springer, 2019). Drawing from the qualitative research material collected from Finland, Italy and Slovenia between 2014 and 2015, the lecture then describes how extended families in different country and cultural contexts make use of digital media and communication technologies. A particular attention is paid to the importance of WhatsApp instant messengers in everyday intra-family communication, which reflects opportunities for new kind of connectivity in geographically distributed multi-household families. The lecture ends by discussing the impact of cultural and geographical factors on the use of digital media and communication technologies in families.
