Objectives and competences

GOALS: Defense Geography gives to the students knowledge in meaning, factors, effects and influences of geographical space on acting and designing the national security system along with the geopolitical guidelines of particular states and international organizations. COMPETENCES: Students will with the help of the geographical space analysis understand military confrontations their particularities and consequences for the environment and societies.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course presents basic elements of geographical space (analysis of lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere) with special outline to the possible conversion of geographical space into battlefield. Further on the course offers overview of some geographical factors that have direct and some indirect influences on security. With that the defense geographical potential is being presented as a starting point for mobilization and waging war what may increase the probability of victory in the battlefield. Basics of the military ecology (including the environmental warfare and environmental consequences of war along with the actions of defense systems) are being explained. Issue of natural resources as factor of influences on defense systems is another matter of the course where special emphasis is given on the theory of natural resources as reasons for the conflicts. The geography of crisis area is explained through the direct and indirect consequences in the environment.

Intended learning outcomes:

Students will grasp on the physical and human geographical data for the needs of planning and organizing of the national security system. At this course the consequences of national security system in action is clarified. Students are able to carry out the independent evaluation of geographical data for the need of national security system and in capable of critical analysis of its actions taken.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures and seminars that are based on the project group work of different case studies.

Assessment

Examination is based on written exam (80%) and seminar paper (20%). Student must fulfill all obligations before he/she may take the exam.
