Objectives and competences

1. To understand political phenomena as processes that are in either conflictual or complementary relationship with models; 2. To understand in what way nowadays political geography is codetermined by social movements; 3. Analysis of expressions od social movements and enlargement of conceptual and analytic apparatus with innovations that emerge in movements; 4. To identify fundamental questions of contemporary world as posed by movements and take position on them; 5. To confront forms of scientific writings and expression with innovative forms of expression emerging in new social movements.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course deals with the emergence and development of the paradigm of new political character and new social movements after the year 1968 and its transformation into global social movements. It depicts social movements as important motor of social and political development and follows the change of the paradigm od social movements from modern forms of social and political organization in the framework of nation state and fordist regime of production to postmodern forms in post-national and post-fordist framework. Special attention is given also to emergence and the outcome of anticolonial struggles and contemporary expressions of anticolonial movements. Theoretical presentation of the paradigm of new political character and (global) social movements is followed by presentation of case studies of existing global social movements world wide and with the reflection of the relationship between movements and institutionalized politics and analysis of channels of political mediation movements are establishing.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding: 1. Students obtain knowledge that allows them to understand phenomena of new political character and social movements. 2. Studying of theoretical and practical articulations of new political character and global social movements will expand and deepen conceptual and analytical apparatus of students. By this their analytical capacity and capacity to reflect theoretically are going to expand. 3. Knowledge of theoretical articulations of social movements and their comparison develop the sensibility of students for social and political processes that are not immediately represented by existing political institutions. 4. The overview of contemporary and significant global social movement will contribute to understanding of basic global geopolitical tensions and frictions. 5. Studying social movements as sites of production and development of political concepts will enable students to understand the relationship between scientific production of knowledge and knowledge that emerges in social movements. 6. Course is going to complete understanding of various political phenomena by being complementary to courses that are dealing with conventional manifestations and institutionalizations of political life, such as state, political systems, institutions, political parties...

Learning and teaching methods:

Methods of learning and teaching are lectures, seminars, individual and collective research projects, active (reflexive) learning, presentations, following and analysing of global political phenomena and global social movements.

Assessment

Oral exam, Two esseys in the length of 2000 word. .
