Objectives and competences

OBJECTIVES: Objectives of the course include getting students to know the most important ways of creative writing, and making them capable of using these ways in their own analytical work in different fields and media. COMPETENCES: Developing the ability to write scientifically accomplished and terminologically precise text, not forgetting its literary and other creative dimensions. Articulation of scientific results in different ways. Parallel development of scientific and literally ways of expression depending on prescribed format of the text.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Content of the course in actually an upgrade of the basic course on academic writing in the first years of study. Students will be introduced to the specificities of writing and, more general, of articulating their opinions through different genres and media: report, review, comment, essay, travelogue, reportage, seminary work and different forms of scientific articles (overview, professional, academic). Course will include theoretical as well as practical part, since students will have to write one longer (or few shorter) final essay(s), dealing with a particular topic, in one (or more) forms of texts.

Intended learning outcomes:

Understanding the most important approaches to write different kinds of academic texts, their use according to different media, ambitions and demands, writing one or more texts on certain topics and their presentation in the class.

Lectures and seminars.

Assessment

Final grade of one final essay (cca. 16 pages) or two or three shorter ones (cca. 8 pages) in a way (literary essay, article, review etc.) and on topic, agreed with the lecturer.
