Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.

Objectives and competences

The objectives of the course is learning and developing understanding on the process of social exclusion and role policies have in preventing exclusion and promoting social inclusion.. Students will develop analytical competence, ability to synthesise knowledge and available research. Also they will develop team work and strategic thinking as well as (policy) evaluation skills; oral presentations skills and written communication skills.

Content (Syllabus outline)

In the course theoretical approaches and practical problems in the field of social exclusion are intertwined. The main themes are: 1. presentation of concepts, such as social exclusion, poverty, , social inequality, quality of life, capabilities etc., and different forms and fields of exclusion; 2. presentation and analysis of main processes of exclusion in modern societies (structural changes, individual reasons, institutional reasons…); 3. presentation of individual fields of exclusion and their relevance, such as system of education, financial exclusion, labour market, spatial exclusion, housing exclusion, health issues and social networks issues; 4. analysis of social exclusion of individual groups and their specific vulnerabilities (e.g. elderly, homeless, single-parent families, minorities, persons with disabilities…), and 5. presentation of various actors providing welfare (state, market and community) and levels at which inclusion can be stimulated - from macro level of national and European social policy for prevention of social exclusion, as well as approaches and programmes promoting social inclusion at the levels of communities and organisations.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding of key concepts and theories in the field.. They will develop understanding of processes of exclusion, with emphasis on increasing sensitivity to social problems of vulnerable groups. They will develop ability to independently analyse social exclusion and policies/activities aimed to address these problems in a comparative (European) context.They will develop skills to use the knowledge in practice and apply it at the levels of communities and organisations.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures; Seminars –project work; Oral presentations; e-learning.

Assessment

60 % Group project – seminar paper, also presented orally in class; 40 % individual exam paper.
