Prerequisits:

Enrolment in any study programme and interest in human rights.

Objectives and competences

- Knowledge of the basic facts about international protection of human rights. - Knowledge of actors in the field of human rights implementation in practice, and understanding of their opportunities, capabilities and limitations. - Knowledge of Slovenia's system of human rights protection. - Learning how the system functions in practice – with respect to individual current issues of human rights protection. - Observing the actual practice of the civil society, particularly Amnesty International Slovenia (which will carry out this course), and participating in individual aspects of its practical work in this field.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Overview and analysis of international protection of human rights at different levels of governance – with a focus on the linkages between the international and the national (state) levels. Overview and analysis of protection of human rights in Slovenia: norms, actors, mechanisms. Analysis of the role and functioning of the civil society in the issue-area of human rights protection. Learning about the work and the role of Amnesty International and Amnesty International Slovenia. Analysis of individual aspects of human rights protection (current issues – e.g. migrants, social minorities, national minorities, workers' rights, reproductive rights, enforced disappearances, torture and similar) and monitoring of the actual practice and work of the civil society in the field of actual implementation of human rights. Practical work.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding: students will know the normative framework of human rights protection, the significance and role of different actors with the emphasis on the role of the civil society (non-governmental organisations like Amnesty International Slovenia), obstacles on the way to access to human rights and their implementation in practice in the Republic of Slovenia and in other selected states (depending on the interest of students and in agreement with the Amnesty International Slovenia). Competences: students will be equipped to become active and responsible citizens in the field of protection of human rights.

Learning and teaching methods:

- seminars and workshops - project work - field work; learning about practical aspects of the work of Amnesty International Slovenia and other civil society actors.

Assessment

Type (examination, oral, coursework, project or other) 100% On-going work, mandatory presence (80 %) and active participation in class, including with regards to individual shorter written reports and with respect to active participation in seminars and other forms of teaching, are the necessary requirement for succesful completion of this course and recognition of all credits. No grade, credits can be used for other courses (based on an intial agreement with the teachers responsible for those courses).
