Objectives and competences

AIMS: To present urban anthropology as anthropological sub-discipline, and anthropological understandings of space and spatiality, and of the processes of social production and reproduction of urban space. COMPETENCES: Forming of new knowledge; critical and political analysis; applicability of knowledge; oral and written communication, research skills.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Urban anthropology as the anthropological sub-discipline (definition, research subject) Anthropogeography and cultural geography Anthropological understanding of space (social construction of space and social spatiality) Thinking time and space – philosophical and historical views Anthropological understanding of the rule of the town/city in social production and reproduction Modern and contemporary critical theories of space Temporality and spatiality of the contemporary cities – case studies Urban utopias and dystopias "Global cities" Contemporary urban spatial practices – hegemonic and emancipatory

Intended learning outcomes:

1. to describe urban anthropology as anthropological sub-discipline 2. to clarify anthropological understanding of space and spatiality 3. to spur and to develop complex thinking of urban time and space in the past and in contemporary times 4. to apply and use new knowledge in critical and political analysis of urban practices in concrete social and cultural environments.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures, seminars, consultations, individual or group work with professor, reading.

Assessment

Work in the class (participation in analysis of concrete problems) 10 % Written exam (test + short paper). 90 %
