Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.
This course within the European integration module builds up the knowledge acquired within elementary courses Introduction to the EU and Genesis of the international community. At the same time the course is horizontally linked to courses which partially deal with one or some European Institutions (International Protection of Human Rights, International Economic Relations, International Organisations with Practicum, Diplomatic and Consular Relations and International Political Economy).
Objectives and competences
The aim of the course is to further students' knowledge on European integration process. The latter should not be focused solely on the EU on which the students by now have already gained an in-depth knowledge. Other international institutions in Europe, discussed in this course, are equally important for the stability of the Continent.
The competences acquired by the student in this course are as follows:
a) ability of written and oral expression
b) analysis of primary and secondary sources and preparation (synthesis) of a seminar work
c) ability to work in a group with a view to designing and implementing a research project.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The course will deal with international economic, political, and military-defence institutions in Europe. The first part begins with a historical overview of the rise of Europe-specific international institutions. This is followed by the analysis of their development and role, inter alia of the Council of Europe, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the European Free Trade Association. The analysis of individual organizations and institutions will cover issues concerning their membership, the internal structure of these organisations, decision-making processes and their importance in the context of international economic and political cooperation in Europe.
Intended learning outcomes:
Terminology and classification related to the phenomenon of the international institutions in Europe; theoretical and historical examination of their origin and development; the role of these institutions in the formulation of relevant policies for Europe.
