Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. A general knowledge of the basics of International Relations is desirable.

Objectives and competences

The aim of the course is to provide general knowledge about international organisations, to further students' expertise in institutional aspects of studying international relations, acquired in the 1st and the 2nd year of study. The competences acquired by the student in this course are as follows: a) ability of written and oral expression b) ability to read and interpret primary sources (such as treaties constituting international organisations) c) ability to analyse the design and implementation of policies of international organizations d) ability to write short clearly articulated critical policy contributions, modelled according to policy papers written in international think-tanks, on activities of international organizations. e) ability to make informed decisions f) negotiations and verbal skills

Content (Syllabus outline)

I. Introduction: putting International Organisations in Context: Globalisation, Global Governance and the Rise of IGOs II. History or International Organisation III. How to study international organisations (terminology, theories, methodologies) IV. Normative level of studying IGOs V. The United Nations and its specialised agencies VI. Regional international organisations VII. International organisations and non-state actors VIII. Simulation exercise: how international institutions work in practice

Intended learning outcomes:

Limits encountered by international organisations in pursuit of their mandates; essentials of decision-making processes of international organizations; the role of various actors which co-operate with international organisations in different forms (e.g. the relationship of NGOs with the UN system via the ECOSOC, the Global Compact, etc.).

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures, Individual/group work.

Assessment

Written exam 50 %, group project work 20 %, simulation exercises 30 %. The completion of the assignments is subject to a successful passing of the exam.
