PhD studentship in Social-Biological methods

There is a +4 funded PhD studentship at ISER at the University of Essex available within the possible areas of research are those related to (survey) methodological issues in collection of biomarker data within a longitudinal study.

ISER will be conducting the Health Innovation Panel study, which will be the 12th wave of the Innovation Panel study. The Health IP will carry a number of experiments on how to collect biomarkers within a survey, and exploration of data quality issues arising from these collected data. The data collected in this unique study will be available for use in the doctoral research. Information about the studentship can be found at

An example area of work:

Methodological considerations in the collection of biomarker data in social surveys

The methods used to collect biological and clinical data in settings such as visits to hospitals or clinic settings may not be appropriate to collection of these data from population representative studies such as Understanding Society and data are typically collected from nurse visits to participant’s homes. The University of Essex is a world leader in methodological innovation and development concerning data collection and study panel maintenance. Issues associated with biomarker data in social studies, for example missing data, need to be examined and addressed using both practical and statistical approaches.

Students can be supervised by leading health researchers and methodologists here at ISER.
