Boštjan Udovič on Pop TV's News Program 24UR Fokus about the Influence of First Ladies and Gentlemen

Prof. dr. Boštjan Udovič commented on the political power of first ladies and gentlemen in Slovenia for the 24UR Fokus news program on Pop TV.

According to prof. dr. Udovič, their role is not limited to duties related to protocol. He explained that spouses of top officials in a country also have the right to convey political messages. They are usually mostly active civil society and humanitarian matters.

Prof. dr. Udovič also pointed out that absence of publicly voicing an opinion does not necessarily equal an absence of political messages, as these may be conveyed in the domestic sphere and as such still influence the legislative or executive process.

He moreover emphasized the need for a clear definition of responsibilities of spouses of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly and the President of the National Council. This would prevent their role and how it is performed being left up to interpretation.
