SURVEY: Artificial Intelligence in Slovenia
The survey (May 2025) highlights the growing number of users of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), which has doubled in a year (to 48% of internet users), the predominant share of ChatGPT usage (83%), and attitudes that show relatively high user confidence in understanding artificial intelligence. The survey was conducted by the Centre for Social Informatics, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana.
As part of the 1KA probability panel, a survey (n = 1,262) was conducted in May 2025 on the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in Slovenia. This was primarily a repeat of key questions about GenAI users from 2024. Main findings:
- The adoption of GenAI is in full swing, as 48% of adult internet users have used GenAI in the last three months, almost twice as many as in 2024, when the figure was 25%.
- Some comparisons indicate that Slovenia lags behind the most developed countries (e.g., the US) by about a year. This is not insignificant, as the intensive adoption of GenAI only began at the end of 2022.
- GenAI is a technology that has been adopted far more quickly than TV, laptops, telephones, the internet, mobile phones, and smartphones. GenAI reached half of the US population in about two years and half of the Slovenian population in three years.
- The adoption pattern continues to be similar to that of the internet three decades ago – men, younger people, and the educated are quicker to adopt it. These groups also show more intensive use, better knowledge, and more favorable attitudes toward GenAI.
- This year (2025) has seen faster growth in the number of users in groups that lagged behind last year (2024) (e.g., among women, the increase is from 20% to 42%, and among men, from 30% to 53%). In relative terms, therefore, the differences have begun to narrow. Trends indicate that virtually all internet users will be using GenAI within a few years.
- The intensity of use is also growing rapidly. The share of daily GenAI users increased from 9% (2024) to 24% (2025), which represents an increase from 2% to 12% of the total adult internet user population. Similarly, the share of weekly users has increased from 20% to 53% (from 8% to 25% of the internet user population).
- The proportion of GenAI users who use more than two GenAI tools also increased, from 24% to 38% (among internet users, this represents an increase from 6% to 18%).
- Text tools (chatbots) predominate among GenAI tools, with 42% of GenAI users using them regularly, while only 3% use image tools.
- Text-based tools (GenAI chatbots) have already been used by 97% of weekly GenAI users (82% of whom use them regularly), while GenAI image-based tools have been used by 43% (6% of whom use them regularly).
- ChatGPT is the primary tool for 83% of GenAI text tool users, followed by Copilot (6%), Grok and Gemini (3% each), and DeepSeek and Claude (2% each).
- One-third (31%) of GenAI users use AI in their daily communication.
- GenAI users are relatively confident in their understanding of AI. For example, 87% say they understand what AI is. There are more problems with recognizing AI, as only 45% of users generally recognize the presence of AI in applications and 40% in devices.
- GenAI users can be divided into two groups. The first (56%) is characterized by high competence, intensive use, and understanding of AI, while the second (44%) is the opposite.
