Gregor Čehovin and Andreja Praček Attended the CIPHER 2025 Conference

Gregor Čehovin, PhD, and Andreja Praček, members of the Centre for Social Informatics, virtually attended the Probability-Based Household Internet Panel Research (CIPHER) Conference in Washington, D.C., on February 27–28, 2025.

Gregor Čehovin presented a paper titled Comparing Probability-Based and Nonprobability Web Panels to Traditional Probability-Based Surveys: Analyzing Bias in Survey Estimates. This study compared traditional probability-based surveys (TPS) with probability-based (PWP) and nonprobability-based (NWP) web panels in Slovenia. Results showed that while PWP estimates had lower bias than NWP, they still differed significantly from TPS estimates. Notable differences were observed in income, opinions, and demographics, with both PWP and NWP deviating similarly from TPS. The paper was coauthored with Vasja Vehovar, Andreja Praček, Luka Štrlekar, and Kaja Forte.

Andreja Praček presented a paper titled Optimal Recruitment Strategy for a Probability-Based Web Panel: Cost and Error Integration. This study assessed recruitment strategies for a probability-based web panel, integrating survey errors and costs. Two experiments, conducted within the 1KA Panel, tested nine incentive types across 9,200 units, with response rates ranging from 16% to 50%. The best cost-accuracy ratio was achieved with an unconditional €5 gift card. Further analyses explored the effects of incentives on response rates. The paper was coauthored with Vasja Vehovar, Gregor Čehovin, and Kaja Forte.

The CIPHER Conference 2025 marked its seventh edition, bringing together experts from academia, the public sector, and private industry to share research and practical insights on probability panels.
