New Publication: A Paper about Farmers' Protests in Slovenia in 2023 and 2024 in the Context of the New Agri-Environmental Regulation of the European Green Deal (Authors: Dora Matejak and Melika Mahmutović)

In a new article, Dora Matejak (researcher at the Centre for Social Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana) and Melika Mahmutović (researcher at the Centre of International Relations, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana) examine farmers' protests in Slovenia in 2023 and 2024 in the context of the new agri-environmental regulation of the European Green Deal.

The farming sector, deeply impacted by climate change and responsible for 20% of global greenhouse emissions, is facing growing agri-environmental regulations from the EU. Since the introduction of the Green Deal, especially since 2023, farmers' protests across the EU have been escalating in response to the proposed changes. This paper examines the 2023–2024 farmer protests in Slovenia, analyzing how affects and discourses justify and shape their mobilization. By exploring the affective and discursive dynamics driving these protests, the study sheds light on agrarian populism and farmers' activism in Europe, offering new insights into the role of farmers within climate governance.

The article is published in the Czech Journal of International Relations. You can read it here.
