A Round Table on the European Commission's Proposal to Address Climate Change
In cooperation with the European Policy Centre and Institut Montaigne, the Centre of International Relations organised a virtual expert round table on the European Commission's proposal to address climate change: Reaching climate neutrality: Will the EU deliver on the ‘Fit for 55 package’?. The discussion, that took place on 27 September 2021, was introduced by Kurt VANDENBERGHE, European Green Deal Adviser to President von der Leyen; Mateja VRANICAR ERMAN, former Minister of Finance, Member of Cabinet of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Slovenia, and Alexandre ADAM, Europe adviser and Sherpa to President Macron, France.
The debate was moderated by Annika HEDBERG, Head of Sustainable Prosperity for Europe Programme, European Policy Centre, and addressed the expected dynamics of the implementation of the 55 package in various European institutions, especially in the Council, the efforts by the Slovenian presidency and the plans of the next one (France). The invited participants represented various government bodies dealing with the climate change in EU member states, members of the European Parliament as well as different interest groups. Discussants stressed the complexity of the Package, a need for a comprehensive approach to planned/proposed measures and especially a need for a well-designed communication strategy at all levels, since the implementation of the goals will require multiple changes in our everyday lives.
