The course will equip students with academic skills they need to carry out undergraduate work in sociology program. It will focus on fundamentals of academic writing with the goal of sharpening students' critical reading and writing skills, together with developing arguments and explanations. The course is composed of three parts. In the first part, the focus is on critical thinking skills in order to develop students' ability for the analysis and evaluation of arguments. Students will learn about the nature and types of different arguments and how they can distinguish between the good and bad argument. The second part is designed as a reading seminar where students become familiar with different types of academic texts and improve their critical reading skills. Special attention will be given to author's formulation of argument, development of scientific explanation and the use of empirical evidence. In the third part, the students will be introduced to structural and discursive features of academic writing in order to develop their writing skills and learn how to handle and cite sources.
