At the course, the most important approaches to analysis and critical reflection of popular music are introduced. More specifically, the course is comprised of three major parts. The first one addresses various analytical tools from which one can analyse popular music. These are related to the questions about the consumers of popular music, industry, technology, gender roles and localities. The second part focuses on production of meaning in popular songs. The latter are analysed on the levels of musical conventions, texts, gestures, sounds, images etc. At the seminar the third part, covering the history of popular music, is discussed.
