The focus will be on the cultural analysis of the phenomenon of popular music, with the emphasis on various theoretical and analytical approaches which were most influential in popular music study in the world of cultural science. We will deal with the whole 'cultural circle' in which sounds, images and meanings of popular music are created which will give students a perspective on aspects of cultural industry, musical audiences and the role of mass media in the history of various styles of popular music. We will also deal with ideological constructs in connection with the production, representation, regulation and consumption of musical commmodities which influence the construction of specific meanings of popular music in various historical, geographical, cultural and political circumstances.
