Short content

The following topics will be treated: conceptual clarification of basic categories and divisions among different theoretical approaches and authors; analytical explication and critical insights into a binarity of globalisation processes, which can represent a constructive ground for polycentric cultural space or can derive from monistic and autocratic principles. Transnational transfer of specific cultural patterns and life-styles, longing for uniformity and homogenity (eurocentrism) on behalf of a global culture frequently tends to suppress the idea of democratic citizen and his/her ability of critical involvement in public matters. The latter is even easier due to the processes of mcdonaldization of contemporary life-styles. The course will also deal with cultural/social differencies and the issue of communication noise in the present. Finally, concepts of multiculturalism and multicultural practices, which reject the notion of homogeneous (national) cultures and advocate the idea of cultural heterogeneity and protection of cultural differencies on the basis of cultural relativism will be discussed.
