Short content

Presentation and discussion on basic theoretical approaches in ethnic studies: primordialism, modernism (instrumentalism), ethnic approach. Definitions of the nation; factors of the nation-building process; the critics of Eurocentric paradigm in the research of ethnic groups; persistance/obsolence of the concept of the nation in contemporary societies. Specificies of the nation-building processes in Eastern and Central Europe and in the Balkans; comparative analysis of the cultural, linguistic, historical and religious nationalisms. Dilemmas in defining the Balkans: geographic, cultural, political, historical, religious, and symbolic views; similarities and differences in different fields with neighbouring regions (Central and Eastern Europe, Mediterranean, Near East). Origins and dimensions of the Balkanist discourse: science, literature, mass media, political discourse, popular culture etc.; the critics of the Balkanist discourse; case studies of its creation within and outside of the Balkans.
