The course introduces the basis of social scientific and humanistic studies of religion. After the presentation of the basic definitions (religion, culture, myth, ritual, transcendence, sacred …) it sketches the main theoretical and methodological approaches developed by sociology of religion, anthropology of r., philosophy of r., phenomenology of r., history of r., theology, psychology of r. and religious studies. The course analyses the complex roles of religion in contemporary societies, focusing on its constructive (i.e. integrative role in highly individualized world) and destructive aspects (i.e. the role of religion as potential generator of conflicts).
