In the first part, the course deals with the mission and definitions of journalism, elements of journalism professionalization, crisis of journalism identity and problems of market-driven journalism. In the second part, it concerns with the basics of journalism theory and practice, e.g., schematization of mass communication, structure of news discourse, typology of journalistic events, news-value factors and functions of a journalistic text; short news items are studied in detail. The third part discusses topics concerning news sources, e.g., verifying information and citing sources, source confidentiality, (un)official sources, journalistic routinization and channels of collecting information. In the fourth part, students learn about the Code of Slovenian Journalists and how journalistic community in Slovenia is organised.
