Short content
The course deals with communication systems in the context of normative conceptualizations of communication and the media (the public, the right to communication, freedom of the press, censorship, watchdog function of the media). Attention is paid to the comparative study of models of communication systems. The course specifically deals with the characteristics of public and commercial models of regulation of the communications sphere and the contemporary trends in regulation and deregulation. The homogenization of the national media landscape are discussed, and implications on class, gender and ethnic divisions in the process of media production and consumption. In considering the (de)regulatory frameworks the main topics are the concentration of media ownership (monopolies, oligopolies) and the importance of media pluralism. The course deals with media policies of some Western European countries and the communications systems of Central and Eastern Europe, including an analysis of media sphere in Slovenia. Attention is paid to the analysis of the European communication policy, the processes of Americanization, Europeanization and convergence of media in a global perspective.
