Short content
The course addresses major theories of democracy, the historical debates about democracy, as well as the modern conceptions of democratic theories and practices – i.e. in particular, their challenges in a globalized world. Throughout the semester we will discuss, inter alia, the following topics: understanding of democracy; boundaries and dilemmas of democracy; democracy in various political traditions; democracy and political participation; individual, community and democracy; democracy and political power; democratic transitions; democracy and disobedience; democracy in a globalized world; democracy and (newest) social movements; sources of democracy; post-democracy. Seminars will focus on democratic models, which today form the core of the political systems.
