Short content
The course presents the information revolutions in the history of the development of media communication. Emphasis is put on social and cultural history of the press and electronic media in the world and in the Slovenian area. Technological, economic, political and cultural aspects of media will be put into wider historical context. The course will critically evaluate various developments and transformations of media, which significantly marked social and political communities and restructured everyday lives of people in the past. The course will present those important historical milestones which significantly modified form, content and functions of media as technologies, social institutions and cultural spaces. The course will move from the development of hieroglyphs through Gutenberg to Google. We will be interested in broader social and cultural implications of the changes in communication. We will be interested in the ways how various forms of media communication throughout history transformed relations between people, patterns and ways of social interaction and sociability, and how they reorganized society and its various spheres. The course will also deal with the historical role of media discourse and technology in the formation of the foundations on which modern media society has emerged.
