New issue of Social Politics highlights transitions through a gender lens
A special issue of Social Politics: International Studies in Gender, State, and Society, edited by Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Kanjuo-Mrčela from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Argentinian sociologist Ana Laura Rodriguez-Gusta, has been published. In an introductory paper on the journey through different transitions in Latin America and post-socialist Europe, they provide an analysis of social, political and economic transitions and their effects on gender equality.
Using the concept of "transition", Prof. Dr. Kanjuo-Mrčela and Rodriguez-Gusta explore the interplay between socio-political turbulence, institutional transformations and feminist activism. They highlight how transitions marked by democratisation, social movements and neoliberal reforms both promote and constrain gender equality, reflecting both regional specificities and universal challenges. They critically evaluate feminist conceptualisations of transitions, identifying regional differences and the role of global and local forces in shaping progress and regress in gender equality.
Through the analysis presented here, the authors challenge Western-centric interpretations and advocate for a diverse and contextually sensitive understanding of feminist practices, policies and discourses in transitional environments.
