Decline of public intellectuals is a problem and we need to do something about it

For the PhD students in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the academic year 2021/22 began with a guest lecture by Prof. Andrew Calabrese from the University of Colorado. He confronted us with the problem of declining public intellectuals that we have been facing for several decades already, but which has recently been exacerbated by rise of online influencers whose voices usually do not rely on academic knowledge and scientific research. He stressed the importance future PhDs, as well as renowned scientists who should not limit themselves to their narrow academic networks of peers and their specialized scientific journals, but rather speak publicly about relevant scientific knowledge for the general public. He reminded us, the social sciences humanities scholars, to use our position as intellectual authorities and professionals to engage more directly with relevant publics.
