Are future nurses willing to use telemedicine in their future work?

As healthcare systems continue to embrace digital technologies, telemedicine is increasingly seen as an important tool for improving access to care and addressing growing pressures on health services. However, its successful implementation will depend not only on technological advances but also on the readiness of future healthcare professionals to incorporate it into their practice.

A research by Assist. Prof. Dr. Simona Hvalič-Touzery, Jerneja Laznik, res. dev. Mojca Šetinc and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vesna Dolničar from Centre for Social Informatics UL FSS explored the factors shaping Slovenian nursing students’ willingness to use telemedicine before gaining direct experience with it. The findings show that willingness to use telemedicine is strongly influenced by three key factors: knowledge of telemedicine, perceptions of its usefulness in nursing practice, and technology anxiety.  Students who are more familiar with telemedicine and recognize its usefulness for their future work are more willing to use it. Conversely, technology anxiety reduces their willingness to use telemedicine in their future practice.

The research highlights the importance of integrating competencies related to healthcare digitalisation into nursing education while also addressing technology anxiety and other psychological barriers to technology adoption.
