Lecture by dr. Kang met with great interest by the audience in the EARL
On 15 January 2020, dr. Kang Byoung Yoong, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the Ljubljana University, delivered a lecture on "Seven Keywords in Korean Culture". In his entertaining and interactive presentation, dr. Kang rather convincingly emphasis many differences between the Koreans and the Slovenians; some obvious, some more subtle. To contextualise his description, he offered his critical view of the thesis that globalization is all about liberalisation and shrinking of borders. This may not be entirely true when it comes to culture and language and South Korea is a good example in this regard. Despite its smallness in relative terms (relative to the region in which it is situated), South Korea is still big enough to create an isolated space where (almost an) exclusive use of the Korean language is enough to satisfy most (if not all) cultural needs of the Koreans, from film to popular music.
